If you are scheduled to have a cesarean birth you will be admitted to the labor unit the morning of the procedure. A labor and delivery nurse will help you prepare. At this time, you also will meet with an anesthesiologist to discuss the anesthetic plan that will be followed during your procedure.
Your support partner may stay with you during the birth to offer encouragement and support if general anesthesia is not used.
After the birth, you will be observed in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) for approximately one hour. Your baby will be brought to you in the PACU area to hold and begin feeding. Once your observation period in the PACU is over, you may transfer to a mother/baby room, where your support person may stay with you. Throughout your stay, your nurse will monitor your recovery, provide you with additional pain medication as you need it, and assist you in feeding and caring for your infant. Once you are transferred to your mother/baby room, your baby will be brought to you and your family.
