Newborn Intensive Care Unit Prepared for Small Miracles
Piedmont Fayette Hospital's Maternity Center offers a five-bed, newborn intensive care unit (NICU) dedicated to caring for babies needing close observation or specialized medical treatment.
About 9 percent of all newborn babies require care in a NICU. Piedmont Fayette's highly trained NICU staff includes six board-certified neonatologists available 24 hours a day. The physicians work with the professional staff of NICU nurses, respiratory therapists, patient care coordinators, pharmacists, lactation consultants and speech therapists to provide expert care for each baby in the NICU. The unit is equipped with the latest technologies, including mechanical ventilation and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) equipment. In the event a newborn requires more care, the Maternity Center level II NICU coordinates with the level III NICU at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
"We realize that most parents are not prepared to have a baby come to the NICU," says Roderick D. Robinson, M.D., medical director of neonatology at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. "However, our professional staff has years of experience and parents can feel safe knowing that the most advanced equipment and a highly trained staff - including a full-time neonatologist - are close at hand."
The major focus of the NICU is to provide excellent care for these sick and premature newborns, ultimately to get them well enough to go home with their families as soon as possible. The NICU services offered are based on guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics and other related agencies.
"We have a caring, dedicated team of neonatal nurses and respiratory therapists to take the best possible care of these babies," says Dr. Robinson. "our goal is to get them well and ready to go home with their families."
In the NICU, parents are encouraged to visit their baby and call for updates 24 hours a day. The NICU is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that provide expert care for each baby as well as provide parents with support for any special care needs their child may have when they are discharged home.
