Allergies Safety Tips

An allergy is an abnormal reaction to certain substances called allergens. The most common allergens are pollen, animal dander and insect stings. When an allergen comes into contact with your body, it triggers a reaction from your immune system. Allergies tend to worsen during the summer, when people spend more time outdoors.

Symptoms of Allergies

If you have the following symptoms, you could have allergies.

  • Sneezing, accompanied by a runny or clogged nose
  • Coughing
  • Itchy eyes, nose, and throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Conjunctivitis or “pink eye” (an irritation of the membrane that lines the eyelids, causing red-rimmed, swollen eyes)
  • Dark circles under the eyes (caused by increased blood flow near sinuses)

If you believe you have allergies, talk to your doctor; he or she might send you to a specialist for a diagnosis.

Managing Your Allergies

With the proper precautions, you can help manage your allergies and prevent future allergic reactions.

  • Avoid staying outside for an extended period of time, especially in the morning between 5 and 10 a.m., when pollen counts are the highest.
  • Use an air conditioner and a dehumidifier to keep air clean, cool, and dry.
  • Avoid mowing or raking the lawn, or wear a mask that filters out pollen.
  • Keep your windows closed in the car and at home.
  • After spending time outdoors, leave your shoes outside to avoid bringing pollen indoors.
  • Also, change your clothes to avoid continued contact with the pollen and shower to completely remove pollen from your hair and skin.
  • Do not hang sheets or clothes outdoors to dry.

If you have allergies, visit your physician for allergy medication.
